$1.6 billion

Description

The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (Toowoomba Bypass) is 41km in length and extends from the Warrego Highway at Helidon Spa to the Gore Highway at Athol. A major objective of creating this bypass route was to reduce the high number of heavy vehicles that travelled through the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley areas, therefore improving the liveability for residents. Travel time for heavy vehicles was also be reduced with vehicles avoiding up to 18 sets of traffic lights and not having to mix with local traffic.

Due to the high volume of material (in the order of 10 million cubic metres) being hauled by construction vehicles and the impact on the local road network, temporary traffic management arrangements during construction were of high importance. RoadNet was engaged by the road construction contractor (Nexus) to undertake over 150 road safety audits of the construction traffic guidance schemes prepared for the project. These audits were undertaken in the detailed design, pre-opening, post opening and finalisation stages, starting at project commencement in early 2016 and continuing to project completion in late 2019.
